2) Check out your local VITA site. VITA is Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. http://www.vita-volunteers.org/info_for_鈥?/a>





The free file is pretty cool. There are several tax prep software companies that will allow you (based on income limitations) to prepare your own federal (and alot of times your state) tax return for free. All of them are a little different, but most have an interactive interview to guide you along. I recomend following the interview closely. If you mess up, you are responsible for any errors, penalties or interest. If you have questions, make sure to ask. Alot of these free files will allow you to electronically file your return as well and then you will get your refund much faster, a couple of weeks rather than a couple of months.


The 2nd solution I mention is the VITA. Here volunteers who are certified to prepare tax returns will assist you in preparing your returns for free. Again, this is income based. If you have a difficult return they may not do it. But you get to sit down face to face and talk to someone with income tax knowledge. The VITA program is great. I cant say loud enough how wonderful of a resourse this is for low income families.


I want to make sure you know about the earned income credit. You qualify. It will make your refund larger. If you see a preparer they will already know about this credit because it is a big deal. But if you choose to do the free file, make sure that you get the earned income credit. If you follow the interview it should be no problem.
